| Big Tom Drum Carder |
I stayed home from work yesterday to get my workshop cleaned up when my Big Tom
Carderarrived -- I must say WOW!
The Big Tom sat on the table waiting patiently for me while I did my other chores -- you know the ones I
played hooky to get done. Finally, chores half done, I couldn't stand it any more. Big Tom was just too
much temptation for me to resist.
Thankfully I already had some skirted, tumbled, and picked fiber ready for further processing. I also had a
batt of Suri (from my hand crank carder) and a trunk full of just picked Hacaya.
I ran the Huacaya through Big Tom then removed it from the drum as a batt. I love the reverse function of
the motor. It took me a tiny bit to figure out the speed to use going backwards.
Because I did a lot of prep on the fiber I only needed to card the Huacaya once before I determined it was
ok to blend with the Suri. The second time through I added about 25% Suri on the fly as I fed the licker in.
This time when I doffed the drum I used my diz.
Again there was a bit of a learning curve. WARNING: No matter how much you yell "Stop Stop" at Big Tom
he only obeys the on/off switch.
I think next time I will combine the Suri with the Huacaya at the picking stage and see what happens.
