Overview

Bench Picker

This is a large studio Bench Picker made to pick a lot of fiber quickly and thoroughly. It is made to be used as a table top unit without legs or may be used as a stand alone bench unit with the leg assembly. When the legs are attached, it is designed to be used in the standing position. The total working height with the leg assembly installed is 38.5" tall, 37.75" long, and 12.5" wide. Adding the end caps and top make the total dimensions 39.25" tall and 39.25" long.

Made entirely from 3/4" red oak and red oak veneers, it is 39.25" long, 7.5" tall, and 11" wide. It has a 9.5" wide by 12" long picking area with 424 evenly spaced stainless steel points, that DO NOT RUST. The Picker bed is fully and easily adjustable for more aggressive or less aggressive action, and the Picker sled slides silky smooth on red oak guides.

The table model is shipped fully assembled and ready to use as soon as you take it from the box. If the optional leg assembly or end caps are purchased, they will be shipped in the same box and will need to be assembled at your location. The assembly is very simple and can be accomplished with a single phillips head screwdriver. Instructions are included.

All our products come with a 100% satisfaction guarantee. You may return the product in the original shipping box & packing within 14 days of receipt for any reason for a full refund less shipping. You are purchasing from someone that been working and turning wood for 50 years, having sold pieces to universities, galleries, museums, and individuals in all fifty States and more than twenty countries around the world.

How this Picker Works

The Bench wool picker is used for picking wool. This is done to separate or tease the locks of wool. Some wool types may need more picking then others. Pickers can take the drudgery out of the picking task. This picker has metal points on a flat board, with a sliding assembly also with metal points that moves forward and backward to separate the fiber.

This machine passes the wool from the front to the rear, where it can drop into a container. The average person can expect to pick between 5 and 10 pounds an hour. The picker will tease, separate the ends of the locks, as well as blend wool prior to carding. This will greatly improve the ease of carding, whether by hand or by drum carder. It is also possible to spin the fibers directly from the picked condition to create an interesting and irregular texture, also dyed fibers blended together through the picker can be spun into interesting variegated yarn. We do not recommend using it to pick wool in the grease, as the seeds and vegetation will fall out more easily from washed wool. While some debris may fall out during picking, grass and burrs will not. The picker's purpose is to open the wool to prepare it for carding, or for spinning direct from the picked condition.

The Bench Wool Picker has 424 angled stainless steel points that DO NOT RUST, and are great for most wools and fine fibers.

The Wool Picker is made from sanded North American red oak and red oak veneers and is ready for whatever finish you wish to apply, if any.

SAFETY:
Please treat this picker with GREAT RESPECT and take the appropriate care when using it. Never use this picker when children are in the immediate area. Use the same care you would use with any dangerous cutting device. PLEASE DON’T PURCHASE OUR PICKER UNLESS YOU ARE A RESPONSIBLE INDIVIDUAL WHO WILL ENSURE ITS SAFE USE AND LOCKED STORAGE.

We accept no responsibility for any damage or injury attributed to the wool picker. In addition, for your safety, we recommend wearing leather gloves.

The Mini Picker

Mini Picker

The mini picker is a fully adjustable, smaller, lighter yet efficient version of our full sized studio picker. The mini picker measures out at 22" long, 8.5" wide, and 9" high. Just like the studio picker, it is completely adjustable to account for your varied picking needs. It has roughly half the number of total points of its big brother, totalling out at 224 points (versus 424 points on the studio picker) that are spaced just as densely as on the studio picker. At about one third the weight of the studio picker, this mini picker is excellent for anyone who wants more portable, easy to move tools that don't require as much storage or use space.

Tung Oil Finish

No Oil/Tung Oil Comparison

We'll apply a tung oil finish to all exterior surfaces to protect the longevity of your picker. We highly recommend an oil finish if you're living in a dry climate.

Leg Assembly Option

Bench Picker w/ Leg Assembly

Purchasing the Leg Assembly Option means that you can use your Bench Picker standing comfortably rather than at your table. This is handy if you have extra space (or even your own studio) and you don't want to rearrange the table every time you need to do some picking. The Leg Assembly does require a bit of work to assemble once shipped, but it is easily accomplished and requires only a phillips head screwdriver.

Leg Assembly...$80.90 (plus $19 shipping, free shipping if purchased with picker)
